Peschiera del Garda
Peschiera del Garda is most famous for its unique fortress. This fortress is an architectural jewel, completely encircled by water, specifically the river Mincio, the only outlet of the lake.
Peschiera was already important during Roman times. Back then, Ardelica, as the town was called, was a hub for “navicellari”, people who ferried men and good on the lake and on the Mincio river.
The fortress on the river is not the only fortification of Peschiera, the entire town is surrounded by Venetian defensive systems that were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site recently along the defensive systems of Bergamo and Palmanova in Italy.
Together with Desenzano, Peschiera del Garda is one of the two towns on the lake that have a railway station, thus it is very well connected both to Milan and Verona.
The beaches of Peschiera are long and wide and the peaks of Monte Baldo can be seen majestically from the lake. The surrounding area is full of cane fields.
Unlike the towns in the north of the Garda Lake, Peschiera del Garda lies in the plane fields and cycling is very popular, the town being connected to the city of Mantua by a bike path along the Mincio river.
