Torri del Benaco
Torri del Benaco is a nice fascinating medieval village, built around its small harbour. The village preserves well the old Lake Garda fishermen traditions.
There are ancient buildings like the Scaligeri Castle from the 14th century, where now visitors can find the local Ethnographic Museum.
The tourist development transformed the fishing village in one of the most exclusive destinations on Lake Garda with famous guests like Andrè Gide, Stephen Spender, Laurence Olivier, Maria Callas and many more.
The climate is mild with its Mediterranean vegetation, olive trees are growing at a height of 400 meters above sea level. In the town center some archaeological excavations have brought to light stilt houses and ceramic objects of age of the bronze from as far back as the second millennium BC.
Nearby, the village of Albisano above Torri del Benaco offers nice panoramic views of the lake and the town.
The village of Pai situated north of Torri del Benaco is also a popular yet quiet spot on the lake. The tower of Pai is well worth seeing and nearby the traces of an old fortress can still be seen. The Tanella Caves (Grotta Tanella) are located not far from Pai and while not spectacular, they are worth exploring for a few hours on a hot summer day.
